Where is Watersportvereniging "St. Joris" located?
Watersportsvereniging "St. Joris" is located on the river Noord, a tidal river in South Holland that connects Rotterdam with Dordrecht. This river forms a crucial shipping route connecting the river junction with the Beneden-Merwede and the Oude Maas near Dordrecht to the north side of Ridderkerk, where the Lek and the Noord converge to form the Nieuwe Maas, which flows through Rotterdam.
Despite the crowds on the Noord, the port of Watersports Association "St. Joris" is easily accessible and quietly located. On the river itself, there is always room for recreational boating and the tidal current on the Noord constantly changes. Whether you have current with or against, the harbour is always accessible without bridges and locks. The port is on the "standing mast" route, and ships with a draught of up to 2 metres can spend the night there, even at low tide. The berths have a usual length of 9 to 11 metres, with a width of 3.50 metres. Some berths are also available for vessels up to 15 metres. With 80 berths, it is a small association that has existed since 1952.
The name "St. Joris" refers to the patron saint of Ridderkerk, where the municipal harbour is located. The marina's location offers many opportunities for boating trips, both north and south. To the north, you can go up the Lek towards Utrecht and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, up the Hollandsche IJssel towards Gouda, or towards Rotterdam and beyond. To the south, you end up at Dordrecht, where you can go on the Wantij, visit the Dordrecht or Brabant Biesbosch, or choose the Oude Maas and so on to the Haringvliet, Hellevoetsluis or nature island Tiengemeten.
Watersports club "St. Joris" is located on busy waterways, but they are all easily navigable routes, whether you have a sailing vessel or a motorboat. The port is conveniently located, making it a popular choice for water sports enthusiasts, both moored and transient. Passers-by are always welcome in the small passing port, where there is usually room for newcomers.
When sailing on the Noord, it is important to listen out for certain channels, such as channel 79 near Dordrecht and channel 10 on the Noord itself. Although some of it is busy waterway, the routes are good for all types of vessels.
For water sports enthusiasts who want to enjoy peace and nature, next to the harbour is the beautiful nature reserve the Gorzen and Crezeepolder, where the tide determines life. Waders, spoonbills and beavers can be admired here, and hiking trails are freely accessible. Directly opposite the port are the Kinderdijk windmills, a free-to-visit location where you can walk among the windmills.
